Summary : This text explores the relationship between our inner harmony and the world around us. We are vessels for a fundamental peace, often revealed by external "ambassadors": a landscape, a bird's song, or an attentive silence. The author explains that the inner and the outer are one; by learning meditation techniques or remaining mindful, we can make these moments of joy resonate long after they have passed. By cultivating this connection, we transform every daily opportunity into a path toward lasting peace.
Text
We are a vessel for the fundamental harmony that is everywhere. Our interior is what is closest to us and, if we want to perceive this harmony, that is where we must go. But when one does not know how to turn inward, one might as well recognize this harmony outside.
The world and life are full of things and beings, great and small, that are like ambassadors of this harmony. It can be a beautiful landscape, the song of a bird, the scent of hay, the play of sunlight with the clouds, a kind word, a moment among friends, silence, and all such things. When we encounter one of these ambassadors, it strikes a chord within us, and we feel joy, peace, and satisfaction.
The Inner and the Outer
In another text, it was mentioned that the inner and the outer are not different; here is an example: when walking through a landscape of fields, poplar groves, along the paths of a great park, or in the heart of a forest, one notices that everything there is perfect and harmonious. The leaves of the trees harmonize with the trunk, the trunk with the earth; no color clashes with another. The painter who created these landscapes is an accomplished artist!
When one knows how to find this harmony within, through meditation for example, or through an attentive silence, one rediscovers this harmony through these ambassadors. Seeing it outside sends us back inside.
The Nameless Peace
When one does not know how to meditate to reach this inner harmony, when one does not know a reliable technique, one has no name for this peace felt within. The name does not matter; what counts is the feeling.
The difference between having and not having the knowledge of suitable meditation techniques is whether or not one lives these small daily joys in full consciousness. With the knowledge of such techniques, when one of these moments strikes a chord in you, you can continue to make it resonate, even after that moment has passed. You can do this because you have the method to do so. Thus, the outer will have sent you back to your inner.
Sustaining Inner Peace
You can take these small moments of happiness and place them within you, much like the driver of a steam locomotive would put pieces of coal into the firebox to maintain pressure and move the machine forward. These moments of simple joy, sustained by your attention, make your happiness last. The right way to make happiness last is to go within oneself first, then go out into the world.
It works like a pump: once primed, it operates in a cycle. The inner and the outer merge. It is like breathing: inhalation and exhalation follow one another without us knowing which one we started with.
Beauty Revealed
Meditation and attentive silence allow us to become aware of the beauty of the world, for there we encounter the harmony that created and sustains this beauty. Things on the outside do not need our consciousness to be beautiful: they are beautiful in themselves. It is just that, being conscious, we realize it and enjoy it!
Returning Within
If you become aware of this harmony at the turn of a particular moment, take the opportunity to make this awareness last; close your eyes, breathe calmly, and focus on the feeling of peace and joy and, if you know how, meditate. What I have just told you is also a meditation.
The Paths of Peace
They say all roads lead to Rome. I tell you that there are many paths that lead back to the consciousness of fundamental harmony. By saying this, I mean there are many opportunities to encounter this harmony, despite the confusion of society. Take every opportunity given to you to find peace—the peace you aspire to.
Love, generosity, empathy, tolerance, understanding, simplicity, and sharing are the fruits of fundamental harmony.
